Do you know how LoRaWAN protocols work? Are you a specialist of GS1 identifiers or EPCIS standards? Are you interested how GS1 standards can be combined with LoRaWAN networks? WE NEED YOU!

 What is LoRa Alliance?

The LoRa Alliance is an open, non-profit global association of more than 500 companies backing the open LoRaWAN® standard for Internet of Things (IoT) low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs). In recent years, it has become the largest and fastest-growing alliance in the technology sector.

How is it connected to GS1?

GS1 in Europe and LoRa Alliance Inc. signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in March 2021. As both parties play important role in their field of work, this is a great opportunity to combine the knowledge of GS1 standards in the field of identification, data capture and data sharing with the LoRaWAN standard for Internet of Things (IoT) and telecommunication protocols. The main aim of the collaboration is to provide greater efficiency and interoperability for supply chain and maintenance operations, strengthen inventory management, and simplify data exchanges between different systems and stakeholders by the combination of strengths of both organisations.

What do you need to know about the Task Force?

Following the MoU with GS1 in Europe, the LoRa Alliance has created a Task Force within its Technical Committee to develop Technical Recommendations to combine GS1 standards and LoRaWAN. The expected benefits are the definition of the common use of methods for GS1 identifiers to be carried over LoRaWAN networks while ensuring interoperability across agencies and vendors. This will facilitate asset inventory, lifecycle visibility and traceability of Railway Rolling Stock and their components, and enable access to additional sensing data, pointing the way towards better asset reliability. Multiple applications in other areas or sectors such as Healthcare, Retail or Transport and Logistics are also identified.

Experts from GS1 member companies, in particular those who are already using LoRaWAN, are welcome to join this Task Force. The first version of the Technical Recommendations is planned to be published around mid 2022.

This Task Force happens every 2 weeks on Wednesday between 11-12 a.m. (CET). If you are interested in joining the team, please contact Ildikó Lieber, GS1 in Europe Project Manager (
