| GS1 in Europe Workshop - Increasing European competitiveness through efficient information flows |
On 17 November 2008, GS1 in Europe was pleased to invite to an event in Brussels on eGovernment with a special focus on waste management. eGovernment is an important strategic component for the European Union to reduce administrative burden and to increase competitiveness.
It is put into practice in various industries, policy areas and administrative procedures. However, questions remain on how eGovernment can be even better implemented in practice. Waste management is one particular policy field in which eGovernment initiatives have already been successfully applied in order to fulfil complex planning, management, and reporting requirements.
The workshop organised by GS1 in Europe provided a forum to discuss best practice examples and develop answers on how further progress in the implementation of eGovernment can be made.

| GS1 in Europe Traceability Workhop |
The last GS1 in Europe Traceability Workshop took place in Paris, 16-17 October 2008, at Radisson SAS Hotel at Disneyland Resort, as a continuation of previously held Traceability Workshops in Amsterdam (2004 and 2006).
As the traceability was a very „hot“ topic in Europe (and wider) several years ago, due mainly to emerging regulatory requirements, such as the EU Regulation 178/2002 in food law, it may appear that we have done our „traceability mission“ and that there is almost nothing new to add to this topic.
But, the reality is slightly different. Rapid development of information and communication technologies (ICT) as well as a number of new regulations, international new markets, rapidly growing cross-border trading, and, increasingly, well informed consumers, have greatly affected the business processes in supply chains and placed new challenges in front of traceability solutions.
Through this Workshop the attendants got:
• GS1 Traceability vision and updates, including: - Global Traceability Standard - Updates on all new projects, such as Global Traceability Conformance programme and Traceability Implementation Guidelines - Updates on traceability activities in Healthcare and Fresh Produce - Updates on available technologies in traceability and their co-existence
• Updates on application of traceability confronted to new challenges, such as sustainability or cross-border trading
• Updates on traceability implementations and projects
• Opportunity to participate in working sessions, where you can express your needs and discuss your requirements, giving us the guidelines for the future traceability solutions development
• Opportunity to participate in on-site visit to a company and see how the GS1 standards works in practice Presentations can be dowloaded here:

| GS1 in Europe Regional Forum - February 2007, Brussels |
New challenges cover several major issues that we have to be aware of and work on. On the one hand, as the second phase of European different harmonization projects (ELL, F&V, eCOM) now GS1 in Europe must follow up with the successful implementation of harmonized guidelines and solutions. But on the other hand GS1 in Europe can't ignore the fact and need to open towards new sectors and ensure that more and more stakeholders within the different industries are aware of GS1 and it's portfolio. GDSN, EPC, eCOM are the brands that should play key role in entering into new sectors like eProcurement, Defence, Healthcare etc. The GS1 in Europe Regional Forum (14.02.2007, Brussels) was devoted to put these important issues on the agenda and determined to prepare the strategy and approach for the upcoming months and years. |
